Renting in Austin, TX: Rents, Areas & Tips

Austin is the state capital and the "Live Music Capital of the World," known for its creative, keep-it-local spirit. It's also a major tech hub, which keeps people moving here year-round.

What rent costs right now

Home size Typical rent (Austin metro)
Studio $1,193
1 bedroom $1,226
2 bedroom $1,778
3 bedroom $2,276
4+ bedroom $3,004

Rentometer, all property types, as of October 25, 2026. Rents change often.

Good news for renters: a wave of new apartments has given renters more choices, and Apartment List reports Austin rents were down about 2.3% from a year earlier as of September 2026. Many newer communities offer move-in specials, so it pays to ask.

Popular areas for renters

  • Central and East Austin: walkable, close to downtown, with higher rents
  • North Austin and The Domain: near many tech employers, shopping and dining
  • Round Rock, Pflugerville and Cedar Park: more space for the money, popular with families
  • Georgetown, Leander and Hutto: newer homes, quieter, longer commutes
  • Kyle and Buda: more affordable options south of the city

Major employers

Tesla, Apple, Dell, Samsung, the University of Texas and the State of Texas are some of the area's biggest employers.

Things to do

South by Southwest, Austin City Limits Festival, Formula 1 at Circuit of the Americas, Lady Bird Lake, Barton Springs and live music any night of the week.

My local tips

  • Ask about MUD and HOA rules if you're renting a house in a newer suburb.
  • Check commute times at rush hour before you commit. I-35 and MoPac traffic can change everything.
  • Summer is the busiest leasing season, so start your search early.
