Living in Leander, TX
Leander sits about 22 miles northwest of downtown Austin, at the edge of the Hill Country. It was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country in the late 2010s, and it now has a mix of rolling Hill Country neighborhoods, newer master-planned communities and a downtown that's just taking shape.
Getting around
US 183 and the 183A Toll run north and south through Leander, and RM 2243 connects east to Georgetown. Leander is also the northern end of Capital Metro's MetroRail Red Line, so you can catch the train into downtown Austin from Leander Station.
Things to do
- Northline, Leander's new downtown along the 183A frontage, planned with shopping, restaurants, homes, offices and an open-air plaza
- Devine Lake Park, Robin Bledsoe Park and Benbrook Ranch Park, which has a disc golf course
- Austin Community College San Gabriel Campus, which opened in Leander in 2018
- Crystal Falls Golf Club and quick drives to Lake Travis and the Hill Country
Schools
Most of Leander is served by Leander ISD, one of the larger districts in the Austin area. Some areas on the edges fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Leander has a wide range of options. Crystal Falls offers Hill Country views and a golf course, Travisso is a newer master-planned community with resort-style amenities, and Mason Hills is another popular newer neighborhood. You'll also find older homes in the original part of town, plenty of new construction, and some larger lots and acreage on the west side. Since Leander spans Williamson and Travis counties, I always check the county and tax rate for each home.
A little history
Leander was established in 1882 on land sold by the Austin and Northwestern Railroad and named for railroad official Leander "Catfish" Brown.
