Living in Boerne, TX
Boerne is the county seat of Kendall County, about 30 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. It's known for its German-Texan history, a walkable Main Street, live oaks along Cibolo Creek, and a wide range of homes, from in-town neighborhoods to estate lots and ranch land. The city had about 17,850 people at the 2020 census.
Getting around
I-10 and US 87 run along the south and west sides of Boerne and are the main route southeast to San Antonio. San Antonio International Airport is about 25 miles away. I-10 also continues northwest toward Kerrville, and SH 46 heads east toward Bulverde and New Braunfels.
Things to do
- The Hill Country Mile, a 1.1-mile walking path along historic Main Street and River Road Park, with shops and restaurants along the way
- Cibolo Center for Conservation, first opened as the Cibolo Nature Center on Earth Day 1990, with trails along Cibolo Creek
- Boerne City Lake, opened to the public in 1978
- Abendkonzerte, summer evening concerts on Main Plaza by the Boerne Village Band, founded in 1860, and Dickens on Main, held the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving
- Cave Without a Name, a show cave about 10 miles northeast of town
Schools
Most of Boerne is served by Boerne ISD, which is based in Kendall County and also reaches into parts of Bexar and Comal counties, including Fair Oaks Ranch. Homes with a Boerne address farther out can fall in neighboring districts, so I always confirm the school assignment for a specific address.
Homes and neighborhoods
Boerne has older and historic homes near Main Street, established neighborhoods across town, and newer master-planned communities like Esperanza. Outside the city you'll find larger estate lots, Hill Country communities like Cordillera Ranch, and acreage and ranch properties throughout Kendall County. With rural homes, I also check well and septic, easements and county taxes.
A little history
Boerne was founded in 1849 as Tusculum by German settlers, many of them Forty-Eighters. In 1852 it was renamed for the German author and satirist Ludwig Börne.
